Atlantic Records in 1961. The album foreshadowed what was to come from one of soul music’s most treasured song stylists. Recorded in Nashville and Memphis, between March and May 1961, the LP includes many highlights, such as a Rufus Thomas composition (“Your Love”), a Chips Moman tune (“Promises”), and three songs penned by Carla: “It Ain’t Me,” “A Love of My Own,” and the self-penned teen ballad “Gee Whiz (Look at His Eyes).” Written in 1958 and rejected by Vee-Jay in Chicago, it became a national hit record, reaching the pop Top 10 and the R&B Top 5.

In addition to the original album, this limited collector’s LP includes 2 bonus tracks, consisting of Atlantic singles from the same period: the soulful ballad “I Kinda Think He Does,” and the lovely mid-tempo “I Can’t Take It.”
